New (to me) Phoenix Contact Lean Manged Switch

Posted on 03/28/2013 at 02:41 pm | Viewed 90 times | 0 comments

Today I received a new Lean Managed Switch demo from Phoenix Contact.  I  thought I would document some features I'm excited about. The switch I have is 2891466 and is an 8 copper port lean managed switch preset for AB networks.

Enter the part number at www.phoenixcon.com, a couple of mouse clicks, and I'm looking at the manual.  A quick look says I can assign it an IP using a BOOTP server or talk to it serially via the mini din 6 port. There is no default IP.  I download 'IP ASSIGN', a simple BOOTP server from the Phoenix Contact web site to assign one. Its probably best there is no default IP so installing the switch can never cause a conflict. Entering the IP in my web browser brings up the configuration pages.

First thing I do is assign a static IP so I know where I can find the switch any time. The default password is 'private'.

Ethernet Trouble, Same MAC ID!

I was asked to help with Ethernet communications problems between a Phoenix Contact ILC170 controller and a vision camera. The camera speaks Ethernet TCP and uses ASCII commands such as 'do trigger' to scan an image. This can be done with nothing more than the Windows HyperTerminal program. In our case we were using TCP messaging from the Phoenix Contact controller. After some time the customer had the camera working as desired. This machine was to have a total of 4 cameras so the customer started adding more cameras. This is where things starting going bad.

We have a customer that has an application coming up that will require the Modbus protocol to speak with some VFD's(Variable Frequency Drive). Most of our PLC offerings already support Modbus with little or no programming required however this one particular processor does not. So I am helping this customer write the Modbus protocol in the PLC.

This story starts out while having lunch with Stefano from Enerdoor Inc at Subway. I enjoy taking Stefano there because he has only been in the US for a while and is still learning english. Come to think of it so am I. Anyhow.. the people at subway talk fast and when they ask “White or Wheat” it comes out like one word 'whitaweet'. Its fun watching Stefano's puzzled expression as he thinks of what 'whitaweet'. could possibly mean.

This little servo is going to run my machine?

Recently I had the opportunity to specify a complete automation solution. Servo's, PLC parts and an Operator Display. This was a 4 axis machine with two relatively large robotic arms. The robotic arms are supported by an overhead rail. The two arms independently move along the horizontal rail. The also extend and retract vertically.

Phoenix Contact Controller Upgrade

Jim and I had been tasked with removing an ILC200 controller and replacing it with a newer ILC150 Controller. The software to program these controllers is called PC-Worx. PC-Worx is an IEC 61131-3 compliant software package. There were a few issues due to differences between the controllers. One issue was that somehow we had lost our default values. There were not that many default values so we manually typed them into the new program.

Panasonic Motion is simple, or its supposed to be

I show up at a customers to show them how easy motion can be on a Panasonic PLC. I start up my laptop and notice they have WiFi so I connect to it. Its nice to be connected. I then write a very simple program using a pre-made Panasonic function block. The function block in the picture below is the entire program.
